Google Messages

Everyday texting, with more room to communicate

Google Messages is Google’s messaging app for sending texts, photos, videos, and group messages from an Android phone. It suits people who want a straightforward replacement for a basic SMS app, while still having access to richer chat features when RCS is supported by their carrier, region, and contacts.

Richer chats when RCS is available

RCS can add higher-quality photo and video sharing, typing indicators, read status, and more capable group conversations. Chats with supported contacts can also use end-to-end encryption, helping protect messages and attachments from being viewed by anyone other than the people in the conversation. Support and available features vary by market, device, and network, and some features may require mobile data.

Useful beyond one phone

The app can connect with tablets and computers, so supported conversations can continue across more than one screen. It is also available on Wear OS. Google Messages includes spam protection, which can help identify unwanted messages before they become part of your regular inbox.

A widely used communication app

Developed by Google LLC, Google Messages is listed in the Communication category and has more than 5 billion installs. Its average rating is approximately 4.58 out of 5, based on more than 39.8 million reviews. It is a sensible choice for Android users who want familiar texting first, with richer tools available when the surrounding services support them.
